YORUBA FEMALE FIGURE

This powerful carved wooden figure is an outstanding example of Yoruba art from West Africa. The piece embodies the dignity, spiritual importance, and central role of women in Yoruba culture.

The figure is depicted in a traditional seated posture, often symbolising humility or devotion. Its most notable features include an elaborate, elongated conical coiffure (the seat of the spiritual head, ori), facial scarification and vibrant yellow beadwork on the neck, wrists, and ankles, which signifies high status and connection to the divine. Holding an ornament, the sculpture speaks to themes of offering, nurturing, and fertility.

Condition:
Exceptional Condition. The figure is in very good overall condition. The carving is structurally sound, and the rich, dark patina is well-preserved with traces of blue pigment. There is a small but stable hairline fissure on the right side of the face but no visible signs of repairs.
