YOMBE FIGURES
YOMBE FIGURES

This is a remarkable and unusual Yombe sculpture from the Kongo cultural group, likely from the Democratic Republic of the Congo or Angola. While Yombe art is famous for its naturalistic style and its maternity figures (Phemba), this piece is unique for its depiction of conjoined or back-to-back figures that appear to be twins, an exceptionally rare composition.
The sculpture is carved from wood, exhibiting a rich, encrusted patina typical of age and use. It is mounted on a modern black base.
The carving features two identical, adult-sized male figures seated back-to-back on a small, low stool. Their legs are bent at the knees, and they are shown cross-legged, a posture often signifying status and composure in Kongo art.
Both figures have elongated, expressive heads, open mouths revealing carved teeth, large hands, and long limbs. Both figures are nude, accentuating the naturalistic depiction of the body.
In many Central and Western African cultures, twins are considered exceptional beings, often associated with spiritual power, fertility, and the ancestors. While the Yoruba are famous for their Ere Ibeji twin figures, the portrayal of conjoined adult figures in Yombe art is highly unusual. The back-to-back pose suggests oppositional forces, duality, or a complete cycle encompassing both figures.
The rare depiction of two adult figures suggests it may relate to ancestral power, representing two powerful progenitors or the cyclical nature of lineage and ancestral knowledge.
Condition: Good with wood loss around the base of sculpture
