WURKUN FIGURE

Wurkun Figure, Nigeria.

Columnar figure carved in raised relief with an enlarged head and elongated neck synonymous with Wurkun or Kundul sculpture. Other distinguishing features are the protruding navel, cylindrical body with arms and hands connected as a single oval raised ridge. These sculptures were usually traditionally mounted on iron spikes and used as guardian figures.

The Wurkun like the Mumuye, Chamba and Jukun people live along the Benue River in eastern Nigeria.

Condition:

This figure shows signs of age and handling. The statue has some wood loss around the base and is offered for sale mounted on a wooden block plinth.
