NUPE VESSEL
NUPE VESSEL
Exquisite Nupe vessel. Small terracotta pot featuring a dazzling array of colours
Nupe pots are an essential housing utensil bequeathed to newly wedded brides by their mothers. Unlike the more popular large gooseneck and calabash-sized pots, the small pots are more portable and are used within Nupe homes to collect water for cooking.
Nupe people are known for terracotta pottery and the abstract nature of their art due to their religious beliefs. Only few of their artworks such as portal doors and stools feature stylised animals in relief. The Nupe people are found in different States across the Northcentral region of Nigeria. Bida, a town in Niger State is considered their ancestral homeland.
