MOSSI FERTILITY DOLL

Beautiful wooden Mossi fertility doll from Burkina Faso (Mali). This doll boasts a rich history as an ancient symbol of fertility.  Crafted from a single piece of wood, this traditional figurine stands firmly on its base. It elegantly captures the essence of an adult woman, featuring subtle facial details, intricate hairstyle and female breasts symbolising motherhood. The doll's surface exhibits scarification patterns, signifying the transition into adulthood. 

Mossi dolls are predominantly carved by skilled male artisans and traditionally presented to young girls for play. These dolls, known as "biiga" by the children, become cherished companions and are used by the children when enacting activities like washing, feeding and grooming. 

Beyond their role in play, Mossi dolls hold high significance in rituals related to motherhood.
