Kuba Kingdom, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Mid-to-Late 20th Century

Material: Natural Raffia Fiber, Hand-Spun and Natural Vegetable Dyes

Dimensions: Square 140cm x 56cm

This mesmerizing piece of African art is entirely hand-woven by the Kuba people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Made from the fibers of the raffia palm, this decorative panel showcases the legendary genius and labor-intensive artistry that has inspired generations of modern artists.

Rich in earthy tones, geometric complexity, and textural variation, it serves as both a historic cultural artifact and a versatile statement piece for the modern interior.

The "Kuba Velvet" Technique: To create these textiles, men first harvest, split, and weave the raffia palm fibers on upright looms into a base cloth. Women then execute the complex ornamentation, using natural vegetable dyes to create the black, ocher, and natural tan hues, applying traditional embroidery and sheared-pile (appliqué) techniques to create its plush, "velvet" texture.

This panel features a wonderfully dense, repeating diamond pattern, inset with smaller dark checkerboard and geometric motifs. True to the Kuba ethos, the patterns are delightfully asymmetric and natural, the artist intentionally varies the visual rhythm, celebrating improvisation and individual creativity.

The textile is finished with a thick, hand-sewn woven natural raffia border that beautifully frames the intricate interior work, emphasizing its completely handmade origin.

Ideal Display & Styling
This square Kuba panel is highly collectible and easily integrated into interior designs:

Frame it under glass or on a custom jute mount for spectacular wall art.

Group it with other African textiles for a rich, curated gallery wall.

Drape it on a tabletop, chest, or ottoman to inject natural warmth, history, and texture.

Condition
In excellent vintage condition, showing beautiful, aged softening to the natural colors and fibers. Minor irregularities in the weave and pattern are natural characteristics of this hand-made historic process, adding to its authentic character. This Kuba textile is sold unframed.
