KAKA FIGURE
KAKA FIGURE
African sculpture from the Kaka people who live in the borderland between Nigeria and Cameroon. Very little is known about the Kaka people or the purpose of their expressive, screaming figures. These figures are placed in shrines and receive sacrificial offerings to ward off evil spirits and protect against witchcraft.
The sculpture is carved from very hard wood. The head bears a shallow central crest, a notched nose, circular eyes with ears carved in relief and a long straight beard. The wide open mouth dominates the facial features of this Kaka figure. Rounded, bulging shoulders and bent arms lead down to the angled short legs and large feet.
