A Yoruba kneeling female figure carved from solid wood, in traditional Olumeye style.
Olumeye (meaning 'one who knows honour') are kneeling female figure bowls used by Yoruba chiefs and kings to present kola nut offerings to guests. They are also sometimes used as containers to hold the palm nuts used as offerings to Yoruba deities (Orishas) in the Ifa divination process.
The figure displays refined craftsmanship throughout, with stylised proportions and intricate surface etchings depicting the subject's elaborate coiffure and ceremonial dress.
This piece is preserved in excellent vintage condition. Three minor areas of natural wood discolouration appear on the rear right aspect of the sculpture, a patina consistent with age and the inherent qualities of the material. Full details are visible in the accompanying photography.
