Art & Gallery Hanging Calculator
Calculate exact spacing gaps and nail heights for perfect walls.
Calculator Inputs & Technical Terms
A step-by-step visual reference to taking accurate measurements for gallery walls, frame gaps, and hardware drops.
Tab 1: Gallery Wall Spacing Inputs
Total Wall / Sofa Width
The total horizontal boundary constraint of your installation area. When hanging above furniture, enter the width of your sofa, credenza, or headboard. When hanging on an open wall, enter the full wall length or target focal section.
Artwork Width (Per Piece)
The full exterior horizontal width of each individual piece, measuring from outer frame edge to outer frame edge. Do not measure the canvas opening, glass, or mat window.
Exact Gap (Calculated)
The resulting horizontal breathing room between adjacent frames. This measurement is engineered to match the outer left and right margins for complete visual symmetry across your wall.
Tab 2: Nail Height & Hardware Inputs
Artwork Height
The full exterior vertical height from the top edge to the bottom edge of the outer frame or carved mask.
Target Eye-Level
The standard museum baseline is 145 cm (57 inches), aligning the artwork’s vertical center with average human sightlines. Over sofas, set this so the frame bottom clears the sofa back by 20–25 cm.
Taut Wire Drop Distance
The vertical measurement from the top outer frame edge down to the apex (peak) of the hanging wire when pulled completely tight.
- How to measure: Hook a finger or tape measure under the center of the wire and pull firmly upward toward the top frame edge until all slack is eliminated.
- The Trap: Never measure wire hanging loose or resting flat against the backing board. Picture wire stretches upward into a triangle under the artwork's weight; measuring it slack causes the piece to hang significantly lower than intended.
